City's official July Fourth Celebration
offers
family fun and fireworks!
Bring the entire family and join us for the biggest and best party in town celebrating our nation’s birth and our freedom. On Wednesday, July 4th, families are invited to participate in a fun-filled day of games, food and musical entertainment. The City’s official July Fourth Celebration is a FREE event sponsored by the San Antonio Parks Foundation, in cooperation with the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department. And with the City’s permission, this year’s celebration will include those rockets’s red glare!
Along with food, fireworks, and fun, the July 4th Celebration has added a new element. The H-E-B Military Appreciation Zone, located near the carnival, will be open to active and retired military and their families. H-E-B representative Dya Campos says, “the Military Appreciation Zone is a way
for us to show how thankful we are to our active and retired military and their families. As we celebrate our freedom and independence on July 4th, it’s only fitting that we stop for a moment and thank our troops for all they do, or have done, to protect and defend our country”. The Military Appreciation Zone will be open from noon to 6:00 pm and will serve lunch from noon – 2:00 pm, or until supplies last. A valid military I.D. must be shown for entrance.
Everyone is encouraged to celebrate this national holiday in their own unique San Antonio way by dressing up in their finest patriotic costumes and participating in the popular Salute to the Red, White and Blue Parade, that kicks off about 11:00 a.m. Families who want to participate in the parade are asked to gather at the Woodlawn Lake Gym at the intersection of Cincinnati and Alexander at 10:00 a.m. Parade participants will be judged for best costume, most patriotic, best bike and best group. Everyone is invited to join in and winners will be announced on the main stage immediately following the parade.
District 7 Councilman Cris Medina says, “Each Fourth of July, our community celebrates our nation’s independence and the democratic process ensured by our federal Constitution. And what better way to celebrate than at the City’s official July Fourth Celebration at Woodlawn Lake Park here in the heart of District 7.” The Councilman also reminds everyone to be on the lookout for and use the designated recycling stations located throughout the park. “Let’s hear it for the red, white, and blue…… but keep it green, too,” added the councilman.
Children are sure to have a ball in the Rio San Antonio Cruises All-American Kid’s Zone, which will feature carnival rides and games. More than 20 vendors will offer food and beverages for sale
throughout the day.
Opening ceremonies featuring city dignitaries and event sponsors will begin at noon on the stage at the west end of the park. During the daytime, the best of San Antonio’s local talent will be featured, leading up to the energetic and patriotic U.S. Air Force Band of the West at 7:30 p.m.
